Packing Tips

Plan Ahead

  • Before you start, purchase all of the items you will be needing such as Boxes, Tape, Packing Materials, Markers, Furniture and Mattress Covers, and Moisture Control products. ALL of these items may be purchased from our Moving Supplies section in our Showroom.
  • Identify all of the items that you will be packing in boxes.
  • Resist packing your items in plastic bags. Boxes offer more protection for your belongings, and boxes also stack much easier.
  • Pack as much of your belongings in boxes as you can to minimize your items from becoming dusty.
  • Purchase good quality boxes. Boxes should be sturdy enough to hold up for an extended period of time while stacked on top of each other. Resist the urge to use free boxes from a grocery store or liquor store. Those boxes are generally not suitable for storing your belongings.
  • Boxes and Storage Bins should be uniform size so they stack better.

Packing TipsPacking

  • Pack light items such as pillows and linens in your larger boxes. The smaller boxes should be used for heavier items such as books, etc. Try to limit the weight of your boxes to no more than 35 pounds per box.
  • Insure that all of your boxes are taped up securely to prevent dust from getting inside the box. Taping the boxes securely can also help the box maintain its’ shape while stacked.
  • Label each box’s contents on more than one side. Keep a written inventory of each box’s contents as you pack.
  • Wrap ALL breakables in moving-packing paper, and line the box with bubble wrap or cushion those items with packing peanuts.
  • If you plan to store clothes, purchase a Wardrobe Box that has a built-in hanging rod.
  • Wrap Mirrors and Pictures with Bubble Wrap.
  • Mattresses and Upholstered Furniture should be stored in protective covers, or at the minimum be well covered with blankets or sheets.

Moving into your Unit

  • As you move into your unit make a general map of where everything is stored.
  • Place frequently accessed items near the front of your mini-storage unit where they will be easy to get to.
  • Maximize your space by stacking your boxes. Place heavy boxes on or near the bottom of the stack.
  • Breakdown any furniture that has removable legs or parts. Stack chairs if possible.
  • Place all of your lighter boxes on top of furniture to maximize your space.
  • Clean and wipe down the inside of all appliances to prevent mildew and odors. Refrigerator and Freezer doors should be left slightly open to promote airflow.
  • Pillows, blankets, and linens can be stored inside your washer and dryer. Your dryer can be stacked on top of your washing machine.
  • Tools such as shovels, rakes, hoses, etc. can be stored in clean empty trash cans.
  • Drain the tanks of all small gas-powered machines to prevent gas fumes and odors.
  • Store large pieces of furniture on end to save space such as a sofa. Clothes can be stored in a dresser.
  • Largest items should be stored against the back wall, and side walls, of your mini-storage space.
  • When arranging your items inside your unit, leave some space for a aisle in which to access your belongings.
  • Keep an inventory of ALL itmes that you are storing in your unit. Include estimated replacement values, and take photos or video of all valuable items. Keep a list of all serial numbers.
